“GROUNDHOG DAY”
A type of new year
when we celebrate and join in cheer.
To see if spring will soon be here.
A day we watch no matter the weather.
A time for celebration and fun
when Punxsutawney Phil comes out in the sun.
Will he see his shadow or will he not;
that is the question that makes it all worth while.
In his den where he sleeps
he’s the groundhog everyone wants to meet.
The most important thing about the creature
Is his way of showing us the future.
~ Amanda, Age 12
“A GROUNDHOG DAY POEM”
Groundhogs
Groundhogs
Everywhere
Even in my hair
Usually I’d be afraid
But these are in a parade
One’s named Betsey
One’s named Sue
I’ll even bring one home for you
So remember this Groundhog Day
The one where you could laugh and play!
~ Alisha, Age 12
I WANNA BE A GROUNDHOG
I wanna be ground hog
and live beneath the ground.
I wanna be a ground hog;
be furry, soft and round.
I’d like to sleep all winter;
have lots of dreams and rest;
wake up in spring and have a fling—
with children I’d be blest.
I wanna be a ground hog
and bask in the mid day sun.
I wanna be a ground hog;
eat berries and grass—what fun!
I’ll do my duty yearly,
a shadow yea or nay;
to let you know if spring is here
or alas, it’s far away!
I wanna be a ground hog;
my distance I will keep.
I wanna be a ground hog;
to eat and play and sleep.
I’ll be your friend, do you no harm;
I’ll go on my gentle way.
And every year I’ll send you love
and a Happy Groundhog Day!
